SRG in Switzerland, which has been operating DTT in the country, has been granted a new broadcasting concession that allows it to switch off its 200+ DVB-T terrestrial transmitters and discontinue the DTT service in the country. Only around 1.9% of the households in the country rely on the service as the primary way of getting TV and that is just 64,000 households. Most users of DTT do so on second and third devices. SRG is recommending satellite as the best alternative as services are available FTA on that platform. The signal is encrypted for copyright reasons, but a smartcard is available to Swiss citizens to allow access.
Unlike Switzerland, public broadcasters in Germany and Austria are transitioning to DVB-T2.
