Philips has started shipping the new version of its 40″ display, the BDM4037UW that we saw at IFA (Philips Launches First OLED TV with Ambilight). The UltraHD monitor has a wider colour gamut of 85% of NTSC (whatever that is useful for! – Man. Ed.). The new monitor uses a curved display (3000R) with an MVA panel, the company said and with 300 cd/m² of brightness and 4,000:1 native contrast. Response time is 4ms (G2G) and inputs include VGA, dual DisplayPort, one HDMI 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0. The inputs can be used for PBP applications or PIP (two connections). There is a four port USB 3.0 hub.
There are dual 5W speakers and power consumption is just 43.74W (typical – Energy Star 7.0 test method). Pricing is expected to be about $650

The company’s press release said that colour coverage is 85% of NTSC, while the website said that it is 100%. We think that the website is wrong. Although this kind of monitor should be popular with those that already have multiple smaller displays, we hear that a good share of business for MMD is those that want an ‘HDMI TV’. Of course, the lack of a tuner means that sales can go through MMD rather than TPVision, the J/V between Philips and TPV for TVs. (BR)
