Members of Apple’s supply chain have started to produce components for a 12″ Macbook Air and the Apple Watch. Sources in the supply chain say that the Macbook will be launched in Q1’15, while the Apple Watch will enter production at that point. Quanta has been named as the Macbook manufacturer.
Panel makers in Japan have lowered quoted prices to Chinese vendors for smartphone panels, to compete with Chinese and Taiwanese companies. Sources in Taiwan say that Japan Display and Sharp have been cutting prices, while handset vendors such as ZTE, TCL and Huawei move to expand their makret shares in China and other emerging markets.

A proposal has been presented by Brazilian regulator Anatel, for satellite DTH operators to supply hybrid STBs. Anatel says it wants pay-TV operators to give equal treatment to local broadcasters. The measure is controversial because those same broadcasters (mostly) have carriage deals with the DTH broadcasters.

Netflix is to expand in Europe this year, but a rumoured launch in Spain (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 37) will not take place, the company has said. Netflix last year said that it would not enter the Spanish market due to high piracy levels and the lack of significant pay-TV penetration.
Belgium’s KPN will turn off its digital TV service, Snow, in June. The company has blamed the Belgian government, which it said set the wholesale pricing for access over incumbent networks (Belgacom, Telenet and VOO) too high to make a profitable business.
