Sharp will lower its TV panel production by 20% in Q1’15, according to the China Times, which itself quotes Japanese media coverage. Sharp’s business is struggling as competition rises in China, Taiwan and Korea. The company is now expected to reach 7 million TV panel shipments for its current fiscal year, ending in March.
TCL Multimedia shipped 16.6 million LCD TVs in 2014, slipping 3.5% year on year, falling short of its target of 17 million sets. However, sales of smart TVs increased 34.1% YoY to 3.7 million units. Samsung’s smartphone production lines in Indonesia (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 33) have begun operation, according to Korea’s Edaily. The lines will produce phones specifically for the Indonesian market – about 900,000 per month.
Taiwan-based LED vendors expect demand for small pixel pitch LED displays to rise at a 110% CAGR between 2014 and 2015 – but for prices to fall 20% – 30% this year. A possible oversupply caused by an increase in Chinese makers will cause the fall, it is thought.
