Researchers at the University of Edinburgh have found that using LEDs to transmit data (using either on-off keying or modulating brightness by a small degree) do not have an impact on the use of LEDs as lights. There had been concern that such techniques, known as Li-fi, might reduce the lifetime of LEDs or upset the colour performance. The techniques also had a negligible effect on the heat produced by the provision of data.
Pure LiFi was a partner in the project. (Li-Fi is not a Misprint…)

When I wrote the article referred to above, I wasn’t aware of anybody with current projects in Li-Fi in backlights, but since then, Panasonic has announced its Light ID technology, which is now in LinkRay products.
