Advanced Television reports that Marco Pellegrinato, head of R&D and Innovation at the RTI Mediaset group in Italy said in a panel session at the MIPTV event in Cannes that there might be an interim solution for HD with HDR before the Italian system switches to UltraHD with HDR in 2022 or later. The issue is that the Italian DTT technology is based on DVB-T, but to get to UltraHD, the country would need to adopt DVB-T2 with HEVC to support the higher resolution.

Although transmission in UltraHD is well away, the group is supplying UltraHD using OTT technology and will also continue to capture some content – both sport and other programmes – in UltraHD.
