Dr. Jon Likes LG’s super-wide, high-res, IPS LED Monitor

A word about games

Not all games are made the same, so some won’t be able to accommodate the LG wide-screen display. The well-designed ones, like Half Life, Watchdogs, Stalker, and Splinter Cell do. However, one of my favorites, Fallout, doesn’t. Pretty much any DX11 game will be able to use the monitor. In addition, in many games, Fallout being an example, you can go into the .ini file and manually enter the screen resolution. I did this for New Vegas and it worked fine, and looks great.

We tested the monitor using an Nvidia GTX980. One of the disappointments was that Nvidia’s dynamic super resolution (DSR) doesn’t work with the monitor. No doubt, Nvidia will fix that but as of now it doesn’t. Our test system with the water cooled AMD Radeon 295 x2 was down and we ran out of time to see if AMD’s virtual super resolution technology (VSR) was set up for the monitor. But a we all know, it’s just a matter of time till both companies release an updated driver and fix it.

Cute curve

We all like curves. Curvy fenders on a car, curvy buildings, and curvy people. Therefore, we should like curvy monitors. If I could have a curved monitor for no extra cost than a flat monitor (all other specs the same), I’d definitely pick the curvy one. Would I pay extra for it? Only if I was interested in impressing my friends and family with how up to date and cool I am, which I am interested in doing, so yes, I would pay a bit more—this year.

Does the curve help with peripheral vision? I could not see or feel any direct benefit. But, there is a subjective quality to it. It actually does feel better, closer. It’s hard to describe the effect.

The monitor might be a bit pricey for some at $1,299, but if you’ve got the budget for a 4k then you can afford this.

I love this monitor, and highly recommend it.

Thanks to Jon for this article – I have been intending to get hold of a curved 21:9 monitor – even more after the recent CES show. I’m not a gamer, but I do think that 21:9 does make a lot of sense on the desktop. (BR)
