Quantum3D, Inc., a leading provider of visual computing solutions for government and commercial applications, used I/ITSEC 2014 to announce a dramatic leap forward in simulated global airport coverage with an inventory of over 27,000 airfields now available for simulators running Mantis. Mantis is Quantum3D’s award-winning real-time scene management and image generation software, already in use for training of thousands of pilots worldwide.
Having so many airports modeled in one database now allows pilots to fly to nearly any airport on Earth without having to do time-consuming modeling. Airports are added on-the fly depending on the location of the aircraft. Many of the airfields are already in sufficient detail to satisfy FAA Level D Class II training including:
- Runways at correct location and orientation, with identifier markings
- Taxiways, taxiway signs, and runway distance remaining signs
- Approach lighting systems, runway and taxiway light points
- Visual approach aids (VASI and PAPI)
“Mantis dynamically creates and merges airfield geometry at runtime so there is no need to recompile or regenerate existing terrain in the visual database. Our customers can now create new airfields as simply as editing a text file”, said Jan Bjernfalk, VP of products, Quantum3D. “Mantis is the only fully scalable IG platform that scales with user’s needs from a single channel desktop trainer up to a large 30+ channel full-motion simulator while running the same software and visual content across all simulation environments”.
