8K is So ‘Last Year’

8K is so ‘last year’, at least that’s the way we felt after talking to Spin Digital which is a small German company that was in Hall 14. The company was showing 16K video running from a single server. The system, developed with Azlab Inc, also from Japan, was using four graphics boards and was streaming 16 UltraHD video channels. We asked if the system could run a single image, so staff, obligingly, reconfigured it to show a single stream of 16K video.

OK, we said, so where is the 16K content coming from? Getting content is a big challenge for the firm, so the stream that it was showing was an 8K native stream that it had got from NHK and had upscaled to 16K, so it wasn’t native content. On the other hand, it did look good!

The content was encoded as HEVC and we asked if the bit rate was very high? Not really, we were told, just 400 Mbps or so!

The companies are part of an EU H2020 project, Immersify, with the PSNC – Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (Poland) and others, to develop very high resolution decoding for VR applications as the companies see this as a key enabling technology.
