In 2016, UltraHD TV represented 22% of the 53 million of TV sets sold in Europe compared to only 10% for the year before. However, the UltraHD TV set market in Europe remains far away from China which is the leading market. More than 25 million UltraHD TV were sold in China in 2016 and Dataxis estimates that 40% of TV shipments were UltraHD in the first quarter of 2017 against 33% for year 2016.

Following research Dataxis predicts that UltraHD sales in Europe will continue to increase rapidly despite the lack of UltraHD content and price drops. The democratization of UltraHD made by the manufacturers and the dynamism seen in the Chinese market show that UltraHD sales are bound to rise in Europe in the coming years.

Analyst Comment

The reality is that the shift to UltraHD will happen because that’s the plan of the supply side. The requirements of users are somewhat academic. The panel makers are going to shift to UltraHD, so that will be the key factor. (BR)
