Touch Growth Helps PC Monitors

Global PC monitor shipments in Q3’14 fell 5.1% YoY, to 33.4 million units, according to IDC. Shipments are expected to remain flat, at around 33.5 million units, in Q4’14.

Two of the world’s largest monitor markets experienced modest shipment growth: Western Europe and the USA (4.4% and 4.5%, respectively). IDC expects US shipments to grow again (in single digits) in Q4.

The 16:9 aspect ratio continued to dominate, with an 83.8% share, followed by 16:10 monitors. Touchscreen displays saw double-digit growth worldwide. Western Europe led, followed by the USA and APACxJ.

In vendor terms, Dell led the market with a 15.2% share (more than 5 million units) and 4.8% growth. Samsung maintained its second place spot in terms of shipments and first place in revenue. HP, in third, strengthened its position, growing 4% YoY to almost 4 million units shipped, and an 11.8% share. HP’s shipments grew in six of the eight worldwide markets that IDC tracks.

Lenovo’s monitor shipments were down 1.5%, leading to a 9.6% share. However, the vendor grew in Western Europe – Lenovo’s third-largest shipment region – for the third consecutive quarter. Finally, LG came in fifth place with 3.1 million shipments and a 9.4% share. LG came first in both Latin American and Canada.
