Sony Sold 915,000 PlayStation VR Headsets in 4.5 Months

Sony sold 915,000 PlayStation VR headsets in the last quarter of 2106 and up to 19th February this year. Sony is the only one of the big three tethered VR headset makers to release figures for sold headsets. Sony did have stock issues which limited the number being sold, otherwise the figure would have been higher. In the months following PlayStation VR’s October launch, it was difficult to find stock at major retailers in the US and elsewhere.

Andrew House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, told the New York Times that the company is confident that they are well ahead of the competing Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Sony recently committed to solving the stock issue by adding a new PlayStation VR bundle to the product line, so by April, PlayStation VR should be much easier to find. House confirmed that by Autumn this year, headsets will begin shipping to Latin America.

It is believed that Oculus and HTC sold fewer headsets despite being on the market for several months longer.
