Screen Use OK for Teens Says Journal

A study of 120,000 English 15 year old students has found that a small amount of use of devices with screens seems to boost boost wellbeing. Published in the journal, Psychological Science, the study showed that one or two hours use is positive. Weekday use with a positive effect on wellbeing was described as follows:

  • Playing video games: One hour 40 minutes
  • Using a smartphone: One hour 57 minutes
  • Watching TV and films: Three hours 41 minutes
  • Using computers: Four hours 17 minutes

At weekends up to four hours and 50 minutes of TV was positive. Screen use longer this tended to be less positive. Ofcom in the UK recently reported that pre-schoolers aged three and four – are spending eight hours and 18 minutes a week online.
