China’s Everdisplay Optoelectronics began mass-producing AMOLED panels earlier this year (Display Monitor Vol. 21 No 30). Now OLED-Info has said that the company is developing 5.6″ panels (1920 x 1080) and plans to launch them in February 2015. Following this, the company will produce a 1.63″ (320 x 320) unit for 301 in Q2’15.
Kevin Ho, president of Huawei’s handset product line, has said that the company is planning to build a new R&D smartphone facility in Korea. Ho did not provide any more information, saying, “we have not yet confirmed how the facility will be constructed in terms of size”.
Quanta vice chairman C.C. Leung told journalists in New Taipei City that the company expects “significant growth” in the wearables market next year. Samsung is said to be considering cutting the price of its AMOLED panels for smartphones. Sources say that the company has been visiting customers, primarily in China, to discuss reduced pricing. Reducing the price would mean that Samsung could increase AMOLED fab utilisation and could increase the technology’s market share.
AMOLED panels are being supplied to Russia’s Yotaphone by Samsung Display, industry sources have said. Sharp will supply LCD panels to as many as 25 Chinese smartphone manufacturers from spring 2015, says The Nikkei newspaper. That is 10 more than the company supplies today.
Texas Instruments announced a Tilt & Roll Pixel (TRP) DLP pico chipset supporting 1280 x 720 resolution at MWC this year (DisplayMonitor Vol. 21 No 10). It is now available. Products using the chip are expected to reach the market next year.

The firm believes that the market will grow at a 54.11% CAGR between 2014 and 2018, driven by technology enhancements and convergence.
