Oppo Digital Announces Departure from Disc Player Business

Oppo Digital announced earlier this week that it will gradually stop manufacturing new products. The company’s product range includes audio products and DVD, Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray disc players.

In its farewell statement, the company wrote, “Though Oppo Digital will gradually stop manufacturing new products, existing products will continue to be supported, warranties will still be valid, and both in-warranty and out-of-warranty repair services will continue to be available. Firmware will continue to be maintained and updates released from time to time. Customers can rest assured that they will continue to receive the high quality service and support that they have come to expect from Oppo Digital”.

Analyst Comment

Oppo had a good reputation and this move really highlights that optical media is heading for the exit in the longer (or not so longer!) term. I was struck by the decline in Blu-ray player sales in 2017. Perversely, I have an UltraHD Blu-ray player (I never bothered with a regular one as the PlayStation did the job pretty well) but I rarely use it for discs, but because it is a convenient way to access Netflix as my smartTV is not that smart!
