The GSMA, representing mobile operators, has called on the European Commission (EC) to hasten the switch of the UHF spectrum (470-790MHz) to mobile data traffic. The current plan is to achieve the move by 2020. Director general Anne Bouverot said that it is ‘essential’ that EU Member States have the flexibility to mvoe sooner – preferably between 2018 and 2020, or earlier – to respond to the growth in mobile data traffic.

The EBU opposes the GSMA’s view. Earlier this month it welcomed a recommendation, by the EC’s High Level Group, that the EU restrict access to the sub-700MHz spectrum to digital TV until 2030. (TA)
