After the turmoil of the recession, the graphics chip market appears to be (finally) returning to its typical seasonality, says Jon Peddie Research (JPR), having estimated shipments in Q3’14. The third quarter is traditionally the biggest growth quarter of the year in terms of graphics chip shipments. Overall unit shipments were down 7% QoQ at AMD, but up 11.6% at Intel and 12.9% at Nvidia.
GPU attach rate (for PCs, including discrete and integrated) was 155% (up 2% QoQ). 32% of PCs had discrete GPUs (flat from Q2), which means that 68% of PCs today are using embedded graphics. The overall PC market was up 6.9% QoQ and down 2.9% YoY.
