Google Developing Standalone AR Headset to Rival HoloLens?

A standalone AR headset to rival Microsoft’s HoloLens is apparently in the very early stages of development at Google, according to German tech publication WinFuture, which says it obtained documentation detailing the device.

Microsoft launched its HoloLens tetherless AR headset in 2016. A successor was confirmed earlier this year but, as of now, it only has a tentative 2019 release date.

Codenamed “A65”, the device will be powered by a Qualcomm chipset of some description, though the exact hardware is apparently yet to be decided. It has been claimed that the headset will operate without a tether to any external hardware and will reportedly feature several camera sensors and microphones.

Separately, there are reports that Qualcomm will have a dedicated chip for standalone headsets at next week’s AWE Expo in Santa Clara. We’ll be at that event, so plan to report once its announced officially. (Qualcomm to Reveal New AR/VR Processor Next Week)
