What They Say
Scientists at Dolby and RiT in New York have conducted a project, published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, that confirms that viewers had a preference for images that had an extended colour gamut beyond Rec. 709 and DCI-P3. It was also confirmed that the medium in which the content was generated influences the level of saturation preferred.
SMPTE also published an article on ways to measure colour errors in imagery in HDR content. Errors come from tone mapping and the operation of codecs such as codecs.
What We Think
No real surprise here, but it’s good to see actual science confirming what most display specialists know – people like lots of colour! (BR)
