What They Say
Canon has a new viewfinder technology that it is using to exploit the higher dynamic range of OLED viewfinders. The firm has added an option on its EOS R3 to shown an image in the electronic viewfinder (EVF) that is nearer to the original scene than is traditionally shown. The default is to limit the dynamic range to get closer to the likely final image after processing to, for example, a JPG format which will often apply a particular S-shaped gamma curve, designed to boost overall contrast.
What We Think
DPReview has a nice article with the details of this feature. It also has adjustable ‘sliders’ on several images to highlight the new feature and so is worth a visit if SDR vs HDR is of interest. The site suggests it should, then, be possible to actually show HDR video content in the EVF with full HDR.
After using a good mirrorless full frame camera for several years, I have become accustomed to using RAW image files and although I often use a compact camera these days, the extra latitude to adjust the image after capture because of the higher dynamic range is absolutely worth the extra memory and processing step to convert to a final image for me. Both the cameras that I use are Sony’s and have what I consider to be very good OLED EVFs. I wouldn’t buy a camera without one any more. (BR)
