BBC Streams Rugby League Game Live in UHD and HDR

The BBC streamed last week’s Rugby League match between the York City Knights and Catalans Dragons live in Ultra HD and HDR on its experimental iPlayer Beta app.

The BBC uses HEVC encoding and the Hybrid Log Gamma HDR format, which can improve colour representation on SDR televisions as well, providing they support the BT.2020 wide colour gamut. Last year, the BBC streamed David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II documentary series in Ultra HD and HLG HDR but this marks the first occasion of the technology being used in a live broadcast.
