Appotronics of China is one of the key developers of laser phosphor (L/P) light sources and technology and claims more than 1000 patents in the area based on its development of its own phosphors and its ‘colour wheel tricks’. It has done very well in its home market and told us that it has 4,000 cinemas in China that have taken out their lamp-based light sources and started to use L/P instead. At Infocomm, one of the main demonstrations was of its own DLP projector being compared for colour accuracy with leading brands (including Panasonic, although the label had been masked out).
Appotronics has decided from focusing on its position as a supply chain operator and local vendor and aims to become a global projector brand. The company has also stared to develop its channel in the US (which will be based on system integrators) and will then be extended to Europe. Key staff in Europe have already been appointed. It plans to stay mainly in the ‘high end large box’ market.
Projectors on display included a 13K lumen unit that will be offered at 20K in the future and an ultra-short throw unit. It expects to add support for UltraHD in Q1 2018.
