Baylor 6P & SMPTE Conference Focus on Multi-Primary Colour

What They Say

SMPTE held an event on colour with a focus on multi-primary colour. Among the topics covered was a proposal by scientists from Baylor University for a six primary system, adding cyan, magenta and yellow to RGB to expand the gamut of images. The group is working with NASA to develop the system as NASA wants to get a wider range of colours in its images.

“NASA will provide 6P with unique imagery that no one else has so they can see how it works within the systems they’re developing,”

What We Think

Sadly, this event took place as I was still processing the deluge of material from Display Week, so I missed it. However, we have reached out to get more information and background on the Baylor 6P proposal, with a particular interest in the issue of wide colour gamuts and metamerism. There were interesting presentations in the SID Symposium on the problems of viewer metamerism as increasingly pure primaries are used to push wider three primary colour gamuts. It’s a topic I’m planning to cover in the near future as a Display Daily. (BR)
