In 2017, Skyworth opened a U.S office to explore entering the TV market and launched the U5 series in very limited distribution so far. These are Android TVs with IPS type UHD LCD panels from LGD that are a direct backlight with global dimming. It it not clear if they actually can decode HDR content, however, but they do offer 600 cd/m² of peak brightness. The series comes in 43, 49, 55 and 65″ sizes. These do not seem to have Google Assistant built in. The 43” set retails for as little as $250.
In Q2’18, Skyworth will launch the G2 line that will offer local dimming. This will use panels from Innolux. They will be offered in 50, 55 and 58″ sizes. No additional specifications were available.
In Q4’18, Skyworth plans to offer an OLED TV line. This will be based on an existing line in China, where the company is a major OLED TV seller. The exact design, model and specs are still TBD, but they were showing some prototypes with some very attractive suggested pricing: 55”/$1500, 65”/$2000, and 75”/$3500-$4000.
Skyworth also used CES to showcase its wider range of TVs. Skyworth claims to sell 50% of the OLED TVs in China and is the major partner with LG Display. The new China-based OLED fab just approved by the Korean Government will supply a lot of new panels to Skyworth. The company also owns the Metz brand in Europe, which is heavily OLED influenced in its TV line. Plus, it is a major set top box supplier.
Many of these very nice OLED TVs were on display at CES including a “Skyworth OLED Wallpaper section. They also had demos of the crystal sound technology which places transducer behind the OLED panel to create the audio (like Sony’s A1E).
The company was exhibiting its proprietary AI chips at CES 2018 that can do “precision smooth processing, dynamic object reconstruction and super 4K Ultra HD supplement.” Something seems to have been lost in translation from this press release. We could find no one who could tell us any more about this technology.
Skyworth offers support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on some TVs as well.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of Skyworth.
