What They Say
Atomos has a new 5″ touchscreen device, the Zato Connect, that is intended to capture and manage video from HDMI or USB UVC cameras (USB UVC cameras send video in YUV format and transmit the pixel data over USB as uncompressed YUV or as compressed MJPEG frames). The display can monitor and format the video for streaming and store’s it locally as H.264 locally for back-up on an SD card (uti 128GB). Video from the card can be played back as ‘live’, combined with camera content. A simple audio mixer is integrated and it can connect to ethernet using an ethernet/USB-C dongle.
It connects to the Atomos Cloud Studio and features include PiP, overlays, zoom, flip and frame guides. It will allow many cameras to be used as a streaming device including connection and use with conferencing software such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom. It supports Wi-Fi 5 and runs on batteries or via USB PD.
The 5.2″ display is a FullHD IPS LCD with 1,000 cd/m² of luminance and rec 709 gamut. Calibration support is ‘TBC’. It is intended to be mountable on a camera.
The device will cost $400.
It adds to the Atomos Connect line, intended to connect the firm’s Ninja V/V+ to the cloud and streaming services.
What We Think
This looks like an interesting piece of hardware for YouTubers and others that use streaming content a lot. I’ve been doing more videos recently and it’s amazing how the bits and pieces of lighting/green screens/microphones add up (and I’m not into live streaming needing gimbals, drones etc). I wonder what the size of the market for supplying technology to YouTubers and Tiktok streamers is? (BR)
