WiGig VR Devices Expected in Q3

WiGig chip maker, Peraso Technologies, has said that it expects to see wireless VR headsets using the technology by Q3 or Q4. The company also expects to see WiGig-enabled games consoles, gaming PCs and notebooks, and USB Dongles.

Analyst Comment

We have been tracking Peraso for a couple of years (the last time we met them was at MWC in February) as we were interested in WiGig as a wireless display interface. The company started by supporting broadcast backhaul and USB dongles and looks as though it is extending the range of applications, now. There are a number of different technologies that could be used for this application, so it’s not yet clear to us which is likely to be successful, although given the bandwidth and speed needed, 60GHz technology should be favourite, as long as it can be robust enough. When the band was used for TVs a few years ago, bodies in the way caused problems, but a lot of work has been done on MIMO and other technologies to make high frequency interfaces more robust in recent years.
