University of California, Riverside outfits new Student Recreation Center with giant LCD video display from Barco

Visualization pioneer Barco provided the optimum large-canvas multimedia display solution for the University of California, Riverside to broadcast student recreation activities and live sports in its new activity center: a 27’ x 15’ Barco OVD/KVD series LCD display wall, the industry’s only worry-free video wall for critical applications.

Serving as the nerve center for its recreational, intramural, and club sports on the campus, the new University of California, Riverside (UCR) Student Recreation Center houses a vast array of health and sporting activities designed to help its students have fun and stay fit. With so many options available, the school needed a way to showcase events, share news, stream sports and games in a visually, high-tech format.

Low profile, high performance and perfectly consistent color

Working with AV integrator High-Tech Electric and Almo Professional A/V, Barco developed a low-profile, versatile media wall system comprised of 49 OverView KVD LCD displays, and automatically calibrated for continuous color and brightness by Barco’s exclusive Sense X software technology. The near-seamless wall is powered by a pre-configured and easy-to-use TransForm ECU-110 controller, which manages video sources to enable a multitude of layouts with the ability to control content remotely via tablets and smartphones – without impacting the university network.

Remote power supply – an industry first

One of the most significant benefits of the video wall is its remote power supply, located on a rack mount system 100 m away from the wall for easy servicing. This also decreased the heat/load conversion on the panels themselves. The wall also includes a redundant power supply, a spare unit that automatically takes over the functionality in case the original unit fails.

“It was a leap of faith, as we were the first to use the Barco KVD LCD displays with their ingenious remote power supply – but they worked immediately and delivered beyond expectations,” commented James Gulke, Project Lead at High-Tech Electric.

The Barco OVD/KVD Series LCD video walls were designed to guarantee consistent image quality, even when used in 24/7 applications. A highly affordable video wall among large-scale visual displays, it is also economical to operate thanks to its energy-efficiency, low maintenance and minimal maintenance.

“We are pleased to work with the University of Riverside and our partner, High-Tech Electric, to produce an impressive, yet economical video wall for the new student center,” comments Hans Dekeyser, Vice President Strategic Marketing – Industry & Government for Barco. “Our new KVD/OVD Series LCD displays are an ideal solution for large-scale media applications with high expectations but low space availability.”
