China-based Sigmaintell Consulting has reported that there were 59.6 million TV panels shipped globally in the first quarter of 2017, which was a fall of 0.8% compared to the same quarter last year. However, when square metre total panel area shipments are compared, there is an increase of 11.7% compared to the same period last year.
Due to the average panel size increasing by 0.8” from the preceding quarter to 44.2”, shipments for the quarter reached 31.8 million square metres, mainly due to TV panel sizes. Focus by TV vendors has shifted to 55” TVs and larger models, from 40” and smaller TVs, due to the rise in prices and smaller profit margins for 40” and smaller TVs.
The largest TV panel maker was LG Display, shipping 12.51 million units in the first quarter, followed by Taiwan-based Innolux with 9.44 million units, China-based BOE Technology with 9.13 million units and China Star Optoelectronics Technology with nine million units.
