The Technology Summit on Cinema is an annual event hosted by NAB and produced by SMPTE, takes place on the Saturday and Sunday before NAB. The focus on cinema is designed to be sure SMPTE does not step on NAB’s broadcasting toes.
Historically this has been a very useful event with quality presentations and cutting edge demo – like the unveiling of the first light field cinematic camera from Lytro and the showing of a clip from the Ang Lee film, Billy Lynn’s Long Half Time Walk, in all its 4K/HDR/120fps glory.
Attendance was decidedly down this year and the program was shortened to a day and a half. The topics and presentations were up to previous standards so it is a little baffling why only the leading thinkers were there. The cinema industry is facing a ton of challenges (see Theatrical Winds of Change) and this event highlighted some of them along with some opportunities – CC.
