Targus Docks Support up to Dual 4K Displays

Targus has introduced two new Universal USB 3.0 Docks. The new docks support charging up to 90W and include tips for popular notebook brands. The DOCK171USZ has one graphic output up to 2560 x 1440 (50Hz) or dual outputs at up to 2048 x 1152 (60Hz) while the DOCK177USZ can support up to dual 4096 x 2160 resolution and has dual DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI2.0 (max two usable simultaneously). They cost $199 and $269, respectively. The lower cost device uses the DisplayLink DL-3900 while the higher one uses the DL-6950.

Analyst Comment

We heard at MWC that a significant disadvantage to docks that use DisplayLink is that to ensure universal compatibility, drivers have to be kept in the dock using flash. Enterprises don’t like code in flash scattered around at ‘end points’, so there is a significant move to push to USB Type-C with DisplayPort, to eliminate the need for drivers. (BR)
