Sony’s Limited OLEDoS Production Constrains Apple’s Mixed Reality Device Supply

Insiders are telling The Elec that Sony’s OLED on silicon (OLEDoS) production constraints are going to limit the availability of Apple’s Vision Pro. Sony produces the high-resolution MicroOLED display panels used in the Vision Pro. It’s manufacturing capability for these panels is capped at 900,000 units per year. On a quarterly basis, Sony can provide between 100,000 and 200,000 OLEDoS panels. Apple has reportedly requested Sony to increase its production capacity, but Sony declined the proposition.

The Vision Pro, retailing at $3,499, uses an OLEDoS that integrates a white-OLED and a color filter. With Samsung Display developing an OLEDoS technology using red, green, and blue-OLED, Apple could potentially modify the technology used in future Vision Pro models or it could turn to LG Display, or SeeYa, however unlikely that seems right now. Given the Vision Pro’s high cost and the need to prevent shipping defective products, Apple is expected to keep demand in check until it can secure a broader supply base.
