OLED Prospects Look Positive – LGD Boosting Output

The OLED Association attended the recent OLED Summit and made an interesting comparison between the OLED revenue forecasts from IHS and from DSCC.

The Association has also reported that Skyworth plans to spend $73 million to expand its OLED TV module capacity from 300,000 units to 1,000,000 per year. The brand is said to be #4 in the world for OLED TVs, at 3.2% share, behind Sony at 12% and LG Electronics at 74%.

Other reports from Korea (News1 Korea) have said that LG Display is substantially boosting its OLED TV panel production this year to 3.7 million to 3.8 million which will be more than double the 1.7 million shipped last year. A number of sources have also pointed out that it was confirmed at the OLED Summit that Samsung is working on trying to develop an OLED hybrid panel that would use a blue OLED material as the core light source, with QDs deposited to convert the colour to red and green. At the moment, there are challenges, reported at the event, in getting good efficiency in the green especially, although Nanosys is promising a new material announcement in 2019.

There seem also to be more delays from Cynora and Kyulux in getting to the needed levels of efficiency at the right deep blue. UDC said that it is making progress in getting to a good blue, but is not ready to make an announcement, yet. Andreas Haldi told us that it got to sky blue in 2017. This year, it has developed a ‘display blue’, which is a significantly deeper blue. However, Haldi, said that its performance cannot be compared to the sky blue. Haldi also told us that Cynora has widened its approach to looking at a ‘co-emitting approach (sometimes also called the hyper-fluorescence approach or just hyper approach)’, which we take as broadly similar to the Kyulux approach.
