SkyQ Box Will Challenge OTT Operators

Sky is said to be finalising the development of a new set-top box, which it hopes will help to defend against OTT operators and BT. The box, called SkyQ, will also help to integrate the company’s European operations.

The original Sky box was launched 10 years agoAccording to The Telegraph, the SkyQ box will be shown ‘within weeks’, offering an ‘Apple and Netflix-style’ experience. Owners will be able to watch and record four programmes simultaneously, on multiple devices throughout the home, including mobile devices. According to sources, the STB will also be able to receive UltraHD broadcasts, once Sky is ready to offer them.

The UI of SkyQ has been compared to that of Netflix and the Apple TV. Programmes are presented on a carousel. The software includes some learning aspects, to recommend programmes that viewers might be interested in.
