Samsung: UK Smart TV streaming overtakes linear viewership

What They Say

Samsung Ads Europe said that streaming on the brand’s smartTVs now account for more watching than linear TV in the UK. Streaming got to 59% for the first time, and was 55% in France and 52% in Spain. All viewing has grown over the last year, with linear up 11% but streaming is up by 36%. Gaming time was also up 39% in June compared to January. Around 14% of the market is ‘streaming only’.

What We Think

Just as Covid has accelerated the trend to online commerce, it has also helped those that see streaming as the future. Samsung’s strong position in TV sales could start to really pay off in the future as starts to be able to control much of the streaming market. This was the promise of the move to SmartTV architectures started with the launch of its VieraCast ‘internet TVs’ back in 2012. That 15% of the market now only uses streaming just highlights that there should be a useful market for ‘TV-like HDMI monitors’ without tuners. (BR)
