Profilometry Revision Simplifies 3D Modelling

A (relatively) simple way to create a virtual model of a 3D object, with a single camera, has been hit upon by a group at the Centro de Investigaciones en Optica in Mexico. The discovery builds on earlier work on profilometry, which involves projecting a pattern of parallel lines onto an object and photographing it. A 3D object distorts these lines in a specific way, so a computer can build a model. However, it is difficult to use for non-spherical objects. The Mexican team simply added a second projector, at the same angle to the camera as the first but on the opposite side. Objects are photographed then undergo a small rotation and photographed again.
