Plastic Logic, the UK based developer of organic electronics including organic TFT backplanes for flexible displays, is splitting the existing company into two entities. According to reports, the split will become effective this month.
The UK activities will work under the name of FlexEnable and focus on the development of organic TFT backplanes for flexible displays. The business model for FlexEnable is based on development and licensing the technology.
The existing manufacturing line located in Dresden, Germany will operate under the name Plastic Logic Germany. It will focus on the development and manufacturing of electrophoretic displays (EPD) modules for device integrators.

This split can be interpreted in different ways, but we also have to consider the aspect of the factory in Dresden being built with funds from the Thuringian government. This may have influenced the decision to split off the German based activities instead of closing it down. – Norbert Hildebrand
