Photokina To Go Annual – Moves to May

Photokina has bowed to the inevitable and moved to an annual cycle. It will move away from its traditional September timing to May. The 2018 show will be shorter, although that one will still take place from September 26th to 29th, The show also wants to broaden beyond its core photography topic into areas like virtual and augmented reality, cloud computing, as well as image recognition and holography.

Back in the day, IFA was also biennial and alternated with Photokina. However, it switched to an annual cycle some years ago, and every two years the shows almost clashed. Given the big gaming show in August, that meant that the three biggest German consumer technology shows were very close in time. Moving away from IFA makes sense. Photokina has tried to branch out before – it tried to establish Infocomm Europe, but not very succesfully and ISE took that market. (BR)
