The Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga concert, ‘Cheek to Cheek LIVE!’, which was recorded in UltraHD (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 38), is now available for streaming worldwide. LG and Amazon collaborated on the production; the concert is available on UltraHD TVs to Amazon Video customers.
The Wuaki.tv streaming service will begin to offer UltraHD streaming on the 1st December. The service will be launched in Germany and France, although there are plans to bring it to Wuaki’s other markets (Spain and the UK) in the near future.
Eutelsat expects that there will be 12 UltraHD channels operating worldwide by 2016, on various satellites. Hans-Pieter Schmitt of Eutelsat Germany said, “The development [of UltraHD channels] goes faster than with HD; 4k will also come on DTT and IPTV”.
Amazon is preparing to add UltraHD content to its Prime Instant Video service. Prime subscribers will be able to receive the service at no extra cost.
Cable and satellite TV services in the USA suffered significant subscriber losses in Q3 – but these were offset by telco provider gains. Vizio has entered the Mexican market. The company’s E-series and M-Series TVs are now being sold through Sams’s Club and Walmart Superstore locations.
LCD TV OEM Amtran will produce less than 10% of Vizio’s TVs going forward, say sources in Asia. Vizio has instead shifted its business to Foxconn, TPV and Wistron, while Amtran is focusing on supplying JVC and Sharp.
Documents filed with the USA’s FCC have shown that Walmart is planning to launch its own streaming stick, competing with the Google Chromecast. Wuaki.tv, the Spanish OTT service, is planning to expand to 15 countries by the end of next year. The service is currently available in Spain, France, Germany and the UK.
Dutch cable provider Ziggo had a market share of 62.5% in Q3’13. While the company’s total TV customers dropped by 18,000, to 2.76 million, the total homes passed in the Netherlands also fell. Because of this, Ziggo’s market share remained steady QoQ. Of the company’s subscribers, 2.3 million are digital homes (rising 13,000).
