HD+, the German TV platform, now has almost 1.6 million customers, five years after it was launched. Compared to September 2013, 313,683 new subscribers have joined HD+. An additional 1.3 million viewers are in the free trial period, putting the platform’s reach at about 2.9 million households.
Worldwide UltraHD-capable set-top box shipments will reach 48 million by 2020, says ABI Research. HEVC STB shipments will climb even higher, to 88 million units. Only about 60,000 STBs with both features will be shipped in 2014.
Amazon’s preparations (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 48) have now concluded. The company has launched UltraHD streaming on its Prime Instant Video service – although the service is currently only accessible on TVs, not other displays.
Telecompaper has said that 55% of Dutch TV subscribers were taking a cable service in Q3’14. KPN’s DTT platform in the Netherlands, Digitenne, is believed to have dropped below 500,000 subscribers. In KPN’s recent results, the Digitenne figure came under the heading ‘Other TV homes’ (508,000), which also included analogue FttH customers – believed to be around 10,000. Subtracting analogue customers from the total puts Digitenne’s base under half a million.
Dutch operator KPN is working with SMiT, a manufacturer of conditional access modules (CAMs), to launch an IPTV service that does not require a set-top box. The 72-screen flight information display at Munich Airport (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 27) is driven by Matrox’s M-Series graphics cards. Local system integrator Inonet used a combination of an M9148 quad-monitor and an M9188 octal-monitor graphics card in six of its Magnius-2 videowall controller systems to run the display.
Nanotech Entertainment has signed a deal with Samsung, making its Ultraflix VoD service available on all 2014 Samsung UltraHD TVs.
