UBI Research has predicted that Apple will become the world’s largest OLED customer. UBI president Lee Choong-hoon expects a new curved-screen iPhone to take a 30% iPhone market share in 2018, rising to 80% in 2020. By 2021, the company will buy more OLED displays than Samsung Electronics.
OLED lighting maker OLEDWorks has received a grant from the US Department of Energy, to investigate blue OLED materials. The intent is to raise the efficiency of lights in buildings. No more details were revealed, although the DoE did say that up to $150,000 would be awarded.
The board of TSMC has approved capital appropriations of approximately $4.1 billion, to expand capacity. The money will be used to install and expand ‘advanced technology capacity’, as well as to convert certain logic capacity to speciality technology.
