NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella sent out a tweet reporting that the best-selling games console in the US during the month of June 2018 was Nintendo’s NES Classic, a compact remake of the original Nintendo Entertainment System, first released in 1983. The NES Classic can’t run NES cartridges, but rather comes pre-loaded with a selection of games.
Its position as the best-selling games console in the US means it outsold the likes of the Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft’s Xbox One and Nintendo’s own Switch console.
The NES Classic launched in the holiday season of 2016 as a limited-edition product, and the ensuing melee to secure one saw units being resold at massively inflated prices on e-commerce platforms. Nintendo continued to produce the console until April 2017, before it was officially discontinued. It was relaunched earlier this year. A similar remake of its successor, the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), was also released in 2017.
