IC Insights reported that five of the top twenty chip suppliers will show growth in 2016, with Nvidia and MediaTek top at 35% and 29% respectively. MediaTek’s growth is the result of its strong sales to Chinese mobile phone makers such as Oppo and Vivo. Apple will see 17%, Toshiba 16% and TSMC 11% growth.
Intel remains the biggest vendor, followed by Samsung, TSMC, Qualcomm and Broadcom.
At the low end, SK Hynix was down 15%, Micron and GlobalFoundries down 11% and NXP down 10%.
If the three ‘pure play’ foundries, TSMC, GlobalFoundries and UMC were excluded, AMD, HiSilicon and IDM Sharp would have made it into the top 20. Once Qualcomm’s deal with NXP is done, the combined company will be around $25 billion.
Overall, the value of sales is forecast to rise by 3% this year.
