Lattice Semiconductor and MediaTek have jointly released reference designs to drive UltraHD video over a USB-C connector. Lattice’s USB-C port controllers and MHL transceivers can be paired with MediaTek’s Helio X20 mobile processor.
Power efficiency is key in mobile, and a focus of these reference designs. The SiI83348 MHL transmitter drives UltraHD video on the X20 processor, while the SiI7033 port controller enables MHL Alt Mode on USB-C, as well as Power Data Objects (required for fast charging). The port controller also integrates the switches required to support simultaneous MHL and USB 3.1 connectivity.
Analyst Comment
We’ll be watching for design wins from companies that might want to put Type-C with MHL Alt Mode into their devices. Since we started tracking Type-C, adopters of the MHL Alt Mode have been conspicuous by their absence. (BR)
