Imagination Technologies has refreshed the ageing MIPS architecture with a new 64-bit processor, the MIPS I6400. It is a multi-core SoC with integrated graphics and simultaneous multithreading; up to four threads per core, simultaneously, supporting clusters of up to six cores. The firm says that this design enables each core in a cluster to possess a separate clock speed and voltage level, for precise power management.
64-bit MIPS is one of the three architectures supported by Google’s upcoming Android L OS. The I6400 is designed for use in mobile devices.
