After twenty years, Intel has decided to cancel its Intel Developer Forum events that were due in China next April and the US in August and in the future will run very specific events on particular topics. The company will also still run the Technology and Manufacture Day in March.

I enjoyed the couple of IDFs that I got to. Although they were not display specific, Intel has always cared about graphics and I always learned a lot about the future direction of the PC business. However, it seems to me that the end of IDF really signifies the acknowledgement by Intel that the Wintel architecture is no longer the core driver of the IT and technology businesses. That’s not positive for Intel, which has not been successful in the smartphone space.
The main surprise is the timing – with just four month’s notice, Intel must have had to pay a significant cancellation charge to the event location, we assume. (BR)
