Google has been very successful with its Cardboard VR viewer, with over 10 million shipped and the firm has now filed a patent for a smartphone package that can be re-used to make a viewer. In the past, Coca Cola has made its packs convertible to viewers and McDonald’s ‘Happy Goggles’ were made from a Happy Meal box.
Smartphones with support for Google’s Daydream platform are said to have performance with a Cardboard viewer close to that of the Gear VR. Alcatel, which bundled a free viewer with the Idol 4S, used the VR viewer as the holder for the handset as you can see in this ‘unboxing’ video.
