Glasses-free 3D from Dimenco

Dimenco B.V. was showing their new 65”, 8K, glasses-free 3D display at ISE, along with a new UltraHD 85” display and their older UltraHD displays. All the displays had 28 zones so it wasn’t really necessary to search for a good viewing zone to see the 3D, you were almost always in one. The new unit is based on a 65” panel with a resolution of 8K. Glasses-free 3D always reduces the visible resolution significantly but when the underlying panel has 8K resolution, even with 28 zones, the visible resolution is still good. I would have judged the 8K panel to produce an image about the equivalent of good quality SD or, perhaps, a 720p HD 2D display.

In the photo, the display in the center was the only 8K unit in the booth and was on public display for the first time. The Dimenco rep said the product should be available in June and a portrait version of the 8K display should be available in Q4.

The display on the left is an 85” glasses free display based on a 4K panel, also on display for the first time. The display on the right is a Dimenco 50” display, which is a standard product for the company. Not shown in the picture, but also in the booth, was a 65” 4K portrait 3D display.

Dimenco displays are typically fed with video signals that are encoded with 2D + depth information. The display then converts this to produce the 28 zone image. The displays can also convert from a stereoscopic image with two frames of data for the image.

Dimenco displays are not really intended for watching 3D TV. Instead the company targets casino, signage, medical and automotive markets. –Matthew Brennesholtz
