German television turns 65 this Christmas. TV was launched in the German Democratic Republic on December 21st 1952, and four days later on Christmas Day, 1952 in the Federal Republic of Germany.
During that time, television has gone through many technological advances, including cable remote controls (1954), semiconductor technology (1956), colour TV (1967), wireless remote controls (1975), teletext (1977), stereo sound (1981), satellite transmission (1985) PALplus (1991) and digital transmission in the DVB standard (1995).
The 21st century also brought HD and, most recently, Ultra HD programs have begun to air in the country. According to AGF, the average German TV viewer watches 223 minutes of television each day.
