Facebook Shuts Oculus Content Division

Facebook is shutting the Oculus Story Studio which was set up to create VR content and the company has said that it will concentrate instead on financing and promoting external VR content development. 50 staff will be made redundant.

A $50 million fund has been set up to develop non-gaming applications and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg has said that Oculus has spent $250 million on content, so far.

The decision was made despite the company winning an Emmy for ‘Henry’ a story about a hedgehog. The fourth major project, “The Wolves in the Walls’, has been cancelled. The studio was set up in 2014 and has also developed tools including ‘Quill’, a painting tool for VR which will still be available, although development will stop at Oculus. The app will be made open source for continued development.
