European Cable Sees Digital TV Growth

The European cable industry revenues rose 4.6% year-on-year, according to IHS statistics released by Cable Europe.

Revenue growth for broadband Internet rose 7.5%, for TV it rose 3.7% and for telephony it rose 2.1%. The share of the €23.45 billion revenue for 2016 was 32.8% for broadband and 46.5% for TV with the remaining percentage for telephony.

Revenue growth for TV was driven by digital subscriptions and VOD. Digital TV subscribers rose 6.3%, accounting for 66.3% of all TV subscriptions and generating 80% of TV revenue. The number of broadband subscribers rose by 5.9%.

The cable industry metric for the total sum of TV, Internet and telephony subscriptions, the Revenue Generating Unit, rose by more than 2.7 million in 2016, bringing the total for Europe to 118.24 million.

According to Manuel Kohnstamm, president of Cable Europe, digital VOD revenue increased by 14.1% year-on-year, and expects further growth as 18.5 million analogue TV subscribers are still to convert.
